Greek Mythology 101: Who is Zeus?

For those curious about Greek mythology and who want to learn more about its various gods, monsters, and stories, this is the place for you. Welcome to Greek Mythology 101! Today’s topic: the god king himself, Zeus.

General Info

Zeus is the king of the gods, one of the original six gods born of the Titans Rhea and Kronos, from which all other gods are descended (in fact, I’d say he’s fathered most of them). Zeus rules over Olympus, the home of the gods, but his specific domain is the sky and he is known as the god of thunder and lightning.

Symbols & Sacred Animals

Speaking of lightning, Zeus is often depicted with a lightning bolt in his hand. This is because it’s the symbol of his power and authority. A weapon forged by the Cyclopes for him during the war between the gods and Titans, the lightning bolt helped establish Zeus as the supreme leader of the Heavens.

As for his sacred animals, the eagle takes first place; it was one of the many shapes that Zeus liked to turn into and is often seen as synonymous with the god himself. Other animals that are symbolic of Zeus and his many escapades are the bull and swan.

Relationships

Zeus is married to Hera, who also happens to be his sister. And if you’re thinking that’s gross, you wouldn’t be wrong, but you also have to understand that gods have a different way of looking at things. Really, who was Zeus supposed to marry when the only three goddesses at the start of his reign were his sisters?

However, Zeus does not take his marriage vows seriously. Of the twelve main gods (aka the Olympians), seven of them are Zeus’ children: two of whom are his and Hera’s (Ares and Hephaestus), and five of whom are his with other women (Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, and Dionysus).

Aside from his godly children, Zeus has begotten countless mortal bastards. The most famous of his demigod children was Heracles (aka Hercules), who Zeus granted godhood to after his death as a result of his great strength and glorious deeds.

Of Zeus’ many lovers, the most well-known include:

Titans

  • Metis (mother of Athena)
  • Leto (mother of Apollo and Artemis)

Nymphs

  • Maia (mother of Hermes)

Mortals

  • Semele (mother of Dionysus)
  • Leda (who he seduced in the form of a swan)
  • Danae (who he seduced in the form of a golden mist)
  • Europa (who he abducted and seduced in the form of a bull)
  • Ganymede (who he abducted and seduced in the form of an eagle)

Final Thoughts

As the king of the gods, Zeus is the true power of Olympus. As the lightning wielder and thunder bringer, he rules the skies with an iron fist and a wandering eye.
