Greek Mythology 101: Who is Medusa?

The world of Greek mythology is full of monsters, heroes, and gods, so many, in fact, that they all can be difficult to keep track of. This is where we come in. Welcome to Greek Mythology 101! Today's topic: Medusa, the stone-cold killer.

General Info

Medusa is one of the three Gorgons, monstrous sisters born to the sea deities Phorcys and Ceto. Unlike her immortal sisters Stheno and Euryale, Medusa was a beautiful mortal who was later transformed into a Gorgon by the goddess Athena as punishment after Poseidon assaulted her in Athena's temple. She is most famous for her petrifying gaze: anyone who looked directly into her eyes was instantly turned to stone.

Symbols & Powers

Medusa's most recognizable feature is her hair of living serpents. Her gaze, though, is her iconic power, a single look meant instant petrification for any mortal unfortunate enough to meet her eyes.

Interestingly, even in death Medusa retained her power. Her severed head, carried by the hero Perseus, continued to turn enemies to stone and was eventually gifted to Athena, who mounted it on her aegis (her divine shield) as a weapon and form of protection. 

Relationships

All of Medusa's relationships, other than with her sisters, were filled with strife. There was Poseidon, the god who assaulted her; Athena, the goddess who did not protect her and instead punished her for a wrongdoing she had no choice in; and Perseus, the demigod who killed her.

Tasked by King Polydectes to bring back her head, Perseus used a mirrored shield (gifted by Athena) to avoid her gaze and a sword (gifted by Hermes) to behead her while she slept. It was from her severed neck that the winged horse Pegasus and the giant Chrysaor were born.
